Here is an example of how in our system, there are no restrictions on the chords that you can insert as a passing chord between any two chords as long as you follow our system!!

In this example we are in the key of Db, and we want to move from an Ab Chord to a Db Chord. This typically called a V to I Movement.

Its called a V to I movement because Ab is the 5th note of the Db Scale, and Db is the 1st note of the Db Scale, therefore we are moving from V to I (from Ab to Db).

Imagine yourself sitting at the keyboard the playing the V Chord (Ab) and wondering what chord play as a passing chord before play the I Chord (Db).

With our system the choice is easy. You have at least 12 choices! One for each tone of the scale!! That's right!

You are free to choose a C Chord, a Db Chord, a D Chord, an Eb Chord, an F Chord, a Gb Chord, a G Chord, an Ab Chord, an A Chord, or a Bb Chord.

What this means is you are going to sound different every time you go from V to I, because every time you are going to make a different choice!!! And you don't have to memorize a specific choice because they are all good!!!

The secret is to voice it correctly!!! And that what our course will give you. Those secret voicings!!!!

Don't believe us... try it for yourself with the examples below!!!

In each example play the bass note as indicated with your left hand and or foot pedal. Double up on the bass note with your left hand and play octaves

Adventures in Harmony Gospel Learning Series Mini Lesson Passing Chords

In this first example, we insert a III chord (F) as a passing chord between the (V) and (I). It happens to be an F7#9#5.

In this example, we insert a different III chord (F) as a passing chord between the (V) and (I). It happens to be an F7b9. There are many choices available in our course. You can learn 12 or more than 12, its up to you.

In this example, we insert a +V chord (A) as a passing chord between the (V) and (I). But wait!! There is no A in the key od Db. This chord is known as an out of scale since this chord is not even in the key. This is when the real beauty comes in when you start sing these out of scale chords. This happens to be an A7b10+. The out of scale chords in the key of Db are D, E, G and A... surprise..... these are the chords that you really wanna play! Like we said the secret is out, This course will expose it all. Go ahead and play this movement from (V) to (+V) and then to (I).

Hey that worked out well, let's do that again and choose another note not in the Db scale. Lets choose (D) a (bII). Well just listen to this movement when you insert an (D) chord in between!!! This (D) Chord is called a D-7b10+5!! Dont forget to play the bass notes indicated with your left hand and or foot pedal!!!!

Hey, that worked out well too, How about another kind of (D), that (D) sounded kinda bold and stately! How about a different (D) Chord that sounds more graceful. No problem, because with this course there are many possibilities. You have complete control over the mood. Try this (D) chord which is not as harsh!!! Dont forget to play the bass notes indicated with your left hand and or foot pedal!!!! In case you wanna know this (D) is called a D-7 +5

Hmmm too freaky huh.. seems like you can pick anything.. yes, its that simple with our system!! Well how about an (E) Chord. There is no (E) in the key of Db!! Still no problem! Try this pretty (E) chord as a passing chord between the (V) and (I)!!! Dont forget to play the bass notes indicated with your left hand and or foot pedal!!!! Incase you wanna know this (E) is called an E 6,9 b5

OK lets do this one last time.. you get the idea! Lets try an (Ab) Chord. So we will have two (Ab) Chords in a row!!! This one is a real beauty!!!! This is an Ab13b9
Now I really wanna blow your mind with this last exercise. Like I said these chords in this course are like lego building blocks. You cannot put them together wrong. play the same movement from Ab to Db but this time insert more than one of the passing chords that you just learned. Link them together in any order and as many as you want. Below is one example....
